Packing Tips

1. Use packing cubes or zip lock bags.

You can use these as a vacuum to save space, organize your luggage better. They allow you to lay your clothes flat or roll them. They are light and wont contribute to luggage weight, they are also very affordable.

2. Avoid over packing

You never really use everything you pack, forget the Incase’s and you will be surprised at how much you can live without. It makes traveling easier, especially if you are traveling around regularly. It takes away the stress of arriving at the airport and your bags are over weight. You generally come home heavier then you left so leave space, no pun intended.

You can even pack a foldable bag to bring back things you have bought during your journey.

3. Separate your liquids in a sealable bag.

This point links with tip 1 & 2. In your hand luggage you are only allowed 100ml in carry on. Pack your liquids into smaller bottles this will help you save space and avoid you from over packing. Place them in a sealable bag or ziplock because you never know when your bottle will decide you explode in your back causing a right ruckus.

4. Roll your clothes

This magic trick saves you a surprising amount of space. Used in conjunction with the packing cubes or vacuum bags will make you look like a packing guru. You can also slip dryer sheets amongst your clothes to avoid that smell, you know that one when you open your bag.

5. Make 2 packing lists

One packing list for carry-on and one for checkin bag, start and end with your list. Pack all essentials in hand luggage including your valuables . Find lists on the internet or travel apps this will help with this. Pack a universal plug you don’t want to have to charge your electronics and realise you need a universal plug.

6. Pack one change of clothing in your carry-on

If by some unfortunate chance your bag does not arrive when you do, you will be very happy that you have that change of clothes. You can also change if you feel the need to between those long layover flights.

7. Know your airlines bag policy on weight

This is especially important when flying from international and changing over to a domestic flights as these restrictions vary. There are hefty charges for extra luggage that needs to be checked in.

8. Wear your bulkiest and biggest items on the plane

I always wear my hiking shoes and my rain jacket on the plane as this takes up the most space in my bag. It can also contribute largely to the weight of my bag.

9. Don’t leave packing to the last minute.

This is something so many of us do (by that I mean my wife, Odette), or maybe this is just her way to tricking me into doing the packing. This can avoid stress and take out the risk of leaving things behind you might need but rushed and forgot. Start making a list a week before your departure date, and start laying out clothes and items you need.

10. Last note when you are packing, you'll need to take your laptop out and put it back in your bag at every checkpoint in the Airport also check the measurements of your bag and the airline regulations, they are getting more strict and measuring it before boarding.
