Saving Money on Food.

Avoid Eating Breakfast Around Town

1.

Breakfast is generally not most expensive meal of the day, but it all tends to add up.Try instead waiting till late morning and finding a nice brunch option in the city add up. This is one of the greatest ways to save money. Most hotels or hostels often offer a free breakfast. Take full advantage of the discounted or free food at these places. At breakfast buffets- Utilize this spread as much as you can, by slipping bread, bananas, nuts and more into your bag for later-in-the-day snacking. If you have a kitchen in your hostel, Airbnb or apartment, try to prepare your own breakfast (or even pack your own lunch). We packed our own lunch in New Zealand and Vietnam and it saved us a ton of money!

Dine Like a Local or even with one

2.

Its a great way to experience authentic food and culture and also can save you money. We have eating at many peoples homes and have made unforgettable memories. Most our our experiences were through CouchsurfingWorkaway or even meeting them authentically around town, having a chat and being invited for tea and snacks or dinner. People are generally very interested in your stories and love to tell you about their stories amongst a shared meal. If you are a bit of a loner then you can save money by trying street food (Look for vendors with many customers- Empty vendors are as indication that the food may not be so great or so safe) and going into local dining eating spots. This way you experience real local  food which is often much cheaper and also much tastier.

Find out where the Local Markets are

3.

Not only is this super fun and interesting as you will find some wild things that you probably have never seen before its incredibly thrifty and most of the food will be organic and taste amazing. in Vietnam we were able to buy 1 kg of peanuts for R20- We fried the nuts in a pan with some salt and it was the best snack ever! If you are at a fairly popular market place beware of pickpocketing (We call this SA mode) and also don’t forget you can always try negotiate if prices still seem a bit steep

Split Each Course

4.

I know what you thinking, but this gives you the opportunity to try out more varieties of food and often our eyes are bigger than our stomaches. Some places give out complimentary bread which is great. You can then easily eat 4 smaller meals a day as posed to 3 big meals and still save.

Eat Your Food

5.

This one might seem obvious and I’m sure all our parents wouldn’t let us leave the table without cleaning out our plate. We have been told the garnish on the side is not good to eat but that is nonsense. The strawberries you bought about to turn? Make a smoothy. Do not waste a single item of food ever. making this a priority will change your life even after you return home.

Being Vegetarian Until Dinner

6.

South Africans love their meat but you wouldn’t be able to imagine the price differences between meat and meat free meals. We have been vegetarian for over 4 years now and I’m not here to convert you but this has saved us more money than we would be able to add up. Worried about protein- Eggs for breakfast, green peas, beans, quinoa, tofu for lunch are all good sources of protein. Plus, you can think of you daily dinner and a leaker treat you get to look forward to.

Eating Free Samples

7.

Food fairs as well as farmer’s markets often have vendors who have many samples. Try them all, you might find something interesting you love. Ever been to Spur for your Birthday for free ice-cream? Traveling for someone’s birthday or honeymoon? You’re in luck. Many restaurants offer freebies for special occasions.

Checking in for a Freebee

8.

Use social media to your benefit by checking in or reviewing them. Many restaurants offer free appetizers, drinks or desserts when you simply check in to their location.

Pack a reusable water bottle

9.

It'll save you money and it's better for the environment without you buying water in single use plastic bottles. Restaurants will generally refill them for you for no charge.

You can now buy water bottles that are foldable which are smaller to carry when not filled with water. Another cool thing to look at is a water bottle with a filtration system built in.

Map out some place on your Google maps

10.

Star them in your phone, that way when you maybe get overwhelmed by the stress of traveling, you will already have these places Saved and Sorted, so you won't have to worry finding the stuff you consider cheap.
