Saving Money on Accommodation.

By using sites such as bookings.com or hotels.com to scan out the best deals on Accommodation.

1.

You can easily compare different hotels and use the filter functions to find exactly what you are looking for. We have often gotten much cheaper deals booking accommodation through these sites than actually rocking up to the hotel and asking for the price. Often communication in other counties can be difficult and with this site they receive all information and requirements you have requested.

Find out the local word for "smaller and cheaper” hotels

2.

You can then search that word with your location. Google uses commonly searched phrases such as “hotel” and this will come up with way more expensive options for tourist accommodation. Hotels with bigger marketing budgets, SEO experts and sites that are translated to english will appear higher on the search engines and the price difference can be significantly higher. By using the local vocabulary you can find more inexpensive accommodation that is not only targeted as tourists.

Hotels are not the only option for accommodation now days

3.

There are platforms that offer cheap or even free stay and this has become very common among travelers.

Volunteer\ Work Exchange Programs

4.

If you are fluent in English you can sign up for work exchange programs (Often at schools) where in exchange for you teaching english to the students who want to improve on their english skills, you receive free lodging. Also- If you not that keen on children you can find Business English Exchanges where you converse with employees who want to better their english conversation skills to better communicate with clients. This gives you an opportunity to familiarise yourself with people from a different cultural background.

Platforms such as WWOOF(Work exchange on organic and sustainable properties), Couchsurfing and WorkAway

5.

Platforms we use to find free stay (and sometimes food) along our journey. We have done WorkAways in Turkey and Russia and had some of the best experiences of our lives. You make friends and get a more authentic experience of the country and its way of living. From food to culture, its a fantastic way to explore new places. We have done some Couchsurfing in Nepal and New Zealand which we again enjoyed very much and are grateful to the kind souls who hosted us in their homes and making us feel part of the family.

Airbnb is another extremely popular alternative to hotel stays.

6.

This sight offers lodging- mostly Homestays or Tourism experiences. You are able to book short or long term stays as well as the option to book excursions such as hikes, sight seeing and other tourist activities. Good advice would be to use Airbnb 1 month at a time as this will reduce your costs dramatically. Some places will give you up to 70% off the normal cost when booking for a month. This is definitely a must when staying in a country for a longer period of time.
